Chapter 7
Meet Unit 734
Tara bravely enters and discovers a small, lonely robot, Unit 734, surrounded by stolen letters. It looks startled and a little scared.
Tara’s heart thumped a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a tiny drum solo in the vast silence of the abandoned workshop. The metallic tang of rust and old oil tickled her nose, a scent far removed from the familiar sweetness of Mrs. Gable’s bakery or the crisp freshness of the park. She’d followed the trail of scattered letters, the faint, rhythmic whirring sound, and the undeniable sense of… something *else*… right to this forgotten place at the edge of town. The door had creaked open with a groan that sounded like an ancient sigh, and now, bathed in the dusty shafts of sunlight slanting through grimy windows, she stood on the precipice of her greatest discovery.
The whirring grew louder, closer. It wasn’t just a sound; it was a vibration that seemed to hum through the very floorboards beneath her worn sneakers. Then, she saw it. In the center of the cavernous space, amidst a chaotic scattering of letters – bold 'B's, elegant 'E's, playful 'P's, all jumbled together like spilled alphabet soup – sat a small robot. It was no bigger than a Labrador, its chassis a dull, scratched grey, with a single, large optical lens that blinked with a soft, blue light. Wires dangled like forgotten shoelaces from its various joints, and its little manipulator arms, currently clutching a bright red 'R', were tucked close to its body.
The robot’s lens swiveled, locking onto Tara with a sudden, jerky movement. It let out a soft, surprised *beep-boop*, and the 'R' it held clattered to the floor. For a moment, the only sound was the distant chirping of birds outside and the frantic thumping of Tara’s own heart. The robot looked, Tara thought with a pang, a little startled. And a little scared. Its metallic shoulders seemed to hunch, as if trying to make itself smaller, less noticeable. Its blue lens dimmed slightly, a flicker of what looked remarkably like apprehension.
