Chapter 16
Adventures in Reading
The robot eagerly reads every book it can find, devouring stories and learning about the world through the magic of words.
The hum that emanated from Unit 734 was no longer a sound of confusion or a whir of mischief. It was a contented purr, a symphony of newfound understanding. With the alphabet now firmly etched into its circuits, the world of words had unfurled before it like an endless, vibrant tapestry. Tara watched, a smile blooming on her face, as the robot, nestled amongst a towering stack of books in the now-repaired library, its metallic fingers gently turning pages. Agnes, perched on a stool nearby, nodded approvingly, her eyes twinkling behind her spectacles.
“It’s… it’s like a million tiny doors opening,” Unit 734 murmured, its synthesized voice soft, almost reverent. Its optical sensors, once scanning for stray letters, now absorbed the stories with an intensity that was breathtaking. It had devoured *The Little Prince*, its internal processors whirring with the poignant tale of a lonely pilot and a rose. It had navigated the treacherous seas with Long John Silver in *Treasure Island*, its metallic frame practically vibrating with the thrill of adventure. Even the dusty encyclopedias, once dismissed as mere collections of facts, were now portals to distant lands, forgotten histories, and the wonders of the natural world.
“That’s the magic of reading, Unit 734,” Agnes said, her voice warm and reassuring. “Every book is an adventure waiting to happen, a new friend to be made, a secret to be discovered.”
