The stench of ozone and desperation clung to Lyra like a second skin. Neon Haven, a glittering cesspool of ambition and betrayal, had spat her out, leaving only the acrid taste of near-capture in her mouth. Their escape had been a blur of flickering neon, screeching hoverbikes, and the chillingly efficient hum of Imperial pursuit drones. Jax, bless his cynical, augmented heart, had managed to rig a derelict freighter just as the Shadow Ministry’s hounds had cornered them in a grimy, back-alley cantina. Now, the ship, a patchwork of scavenged parts and sheer willpower, shuddered its way through the void, its destination etched into Lyra’s racing mind: Solaris IX.

“Are we sure about this, Lyra?” Jax’s voice, a gravelly rasp, crackled over the comms. A faint echo of his voice, ancient and weary, had spoken of ancient ruins, of forgotten knowledge, of a power that might just tip the scales. “It’s what the King’s echoes indicated, Jax. There’s something there. Something we need.” She tried to inject a confidence she didn’t entirely feel into her tone. The memory of the Eclipse Knights’ icy gaze, the sheer, unadulterated malice in their pursuit, was a constant knot in her stomach.
