The air in Obsidian Reach was a perpetual, suffocating embrace of sulfur and ash. Lyra coughed, the gritty particulate coating her tongue, a familiar sensation after weeks on this volcanic prison planet. She’d navigated the labyrinthine tunnels, dodged the patrolling automatons, and outwitted the desperate gangs that roamed the slag heaps, all with the gnawing urgency of Orion’s encoded message. It had led her here, to the heart of the inferno, to a place whispered about in hushed, fearful tones even by the hardened criminals of Alysia. And Jax, the hulking brute of a miner, his face permanently etched with exhaustion and the faint glow of residual heat from his occupational hazards, his DNA Chip humming with latent strength. They were all that remained of the initial group that had escaped Alysia Prime, a testament to the brutal efficiency of the Eclipse Knights.
