The hum of the *Stardust Drifter* was usually a comforting lullaby, a promise of distance, of escape. Lyra found little comfort in it now. The ship, once a beacon of hope, felt more like a gilded cage, the vast emptiness of the void outside pressing in, mirroring the hollowness that had begun to spread within her. Kaelen, his face etched with a weariness that had become all too familiar, ran diagnostics. His fingers danced across holographic displays, a blur of practiced efficiency.
“Anything, Kaelen?” Lyra’s voice was raspy, her throat tight from a lack of sleep and too much fear. She huddled in the co-pilot’s seat, her gaze fixed on the swirling nebulae outside, a breathtaking spectacle that felt cruelly indifferent to her plight.
He shook his head, a grim set to his jaw. “The cloaking is holding, but it’s draining power faster than I like. And the pursuers… they’re still out there. Closer than I’d prefer.” He didn’t need to elaborate. The phantom whispers of Seraphine’s hunters, the relentless shadow of the Eclipse Knights, were a constant, gnawing presence.
