Aromatic Beginnings

The diner opens its doors. A trickle of customers becomes a steady stream, drawn by the unique scents and delicious food. Arthur, though nervous, feels a nascent sense of purpose.

The bell above the door of "The Spice Box" gave a cheerful, if slightly hesitant, chime as the first customer stepped inside. Arthur, who had been hovering near the kitchen door, jumped, his heart giving a little flutter of panic. It was Mrs. Gable, the retired librarian from down the street, her spectacles perched on the end of her nose, a familiar, gentle smile gracing her lips.

"Arthur, dear," she said, her voice soft as worn velvet. "Smells absolutely divine in here. What is that wonderful aroma?"

Arthur, still clutching a dish towel, managed a smile that felt a bit too wide. "Good morning, Mrs. Gable. That would be… well, it’s a lamb stew. From the cookbook." He gestured vaguely towards the worn, leather-bound tome resting on a small stand by the register, its pages already bearing faint smudges of flour and a lingering scent of cinnamon.
