The scent of roasting garlic and simmering tomatoes was Arthur’s constant companion now, a fragrant cloud that clung to his apron and to the very air of The Spice Box. It was a welcome change from the stale, lonely quiet of his old life. Yet, as the diner buzzed with contented chatter and the clinking of forks against plates, a different kind of quiet settled within Arthur. It was the quiet of unanswered questions, a persistent whisper at the edges of his newfound joy. The cookbook, his constant guide, remained an enigma. Its pages, worn smooth by time and countless hands, spoke of flavors and techniques, but offered no clue to its provenance.

One Tuesday, after the last customer had left and the familiar hum of the refrigerator took over, Arthur found himself tracing the faded script on the inside cover. There was no name, no inscription, just a faint, almost imperceptible watermark that looked like a stylized rose. He’d spent hours poring over it, searching for any hint, any whisper of its former life. Tonight, however, a new determination settled in his chest. He would not let this mystery linger.

He carefully turned to the very last page, a section he’d previously overlooked, assuming it was filled with less exciting, perhaps administrative, recipes. It wasn’t recipes at all. It was a personal journal, written in a delicate, looping hand that was strikingly similar to the script throughout the recipe pages. The ink was faded, the paper brittle, but the words, though archaic, were clear.
