The air in the living room felt thick, heavy with unspoken words and the lingering scent of Aunt Carol’s lavender potpourri. It had been days since we found the crumpled train ticket, the one tucked so carefully inside Jake’s favorite worn-out paperback. Days filled with a grief that still felt like a physical ache, punctuated by the low hum of suspicion that had started as a whisper and was now a deafening roar in my mind. Aunt Carol sat across from me, her teacup cradled in her hands, her gaze fixed on some point beyond the window, beyond the gentle drizzle that had settled over the town.

“We have to do something, Aunt Carol,” I said, my voice thinner than I intended. The word ‘something’ felt ridiculously inadequate. It felt like trying to dam a raging river with a single, flimsy leaf.

She turned her head slowly, her smile a little too practiced, her eyes a little too bright. “I know, dear. I know it’s hard. But what can we do? The police have closed the case. They believe it was an accident.”
