The air in Aunt Carol’s little cottage always smelled faintly of lavender and old paper, a comforting scent that had, until recently, felt like a warm hug. Now, it just felt… heavy. Like the weight of the world was pressing down, and I couldn’t find the strength to push it back. Jake was gone. My Jake. The one who’d made me feel seen, truly seen, for the first time in my sixteen years of bouncing between strangers. The train ride, the sudden derailment, the news delivered with such cold, clinical detachment – it all played on repeat in my mind, a broken record of sorrow.
Aunt Carol, bless her heart, was trying. She’d taken me in, offered me this quiet haven, and now she was trying to navigate the wreckage of my life alongside me. She’d found me curled up on the window seat, staring blankly at the rain-streaked glass, and had simply sat beside me, her hand a gentle weight on my knee. We hadn’t spoken much since that first devastating phone call. What was there to say? “He’s dead.” “I can’t believe it.” “It’s not fair.” The words felt hollow, inadequate.
“Lyla, honey,” Aunt Carol’s voice was soft, a little raspy, like she’d been crying too. “Have you eaten anything today?”
