The air in Aunt Carol’s living room felt heavy, thick with unspoken things. It clung to the floral wallpaper, seeped into the worn velvet of the sofa, and settled over me like a shroud. Aunt Carol sat across from me, her knitting needles clicking a frantic, almost desperate rhythm against the yarn. It was supposed to be a comforting sound, the gentle hum of domesticity, but all I heard was the ticking clock of my own unraveling life. After Jake, nothing felt comforting anymore.
“Are you sure you want to do this, Lyla?” Aunt Carol’s voice was soft, laced with that familiar concern that felt, lately, like a cage. She’d been so welcoming, so eager to have me, and I’d clung to that warmth like a shipwreck survivor to driftwood. But now, suspicion was a cold, sharp shard at the back of my throat.
I nodded, my gaze fixed on the worn leather journal spread open on the coffee table between us. It was Jake’s. I’d found it tucked away in a box of his old things at his mom’s house, a place I’d gone with Aunt Carol after… after. His mom, bless her heart, was lost in her own ocean of grief, barely able to function. I understood. I felt like I was drowning too, but somehow, I was also treading water, fueled by a desperate need to keep my head above the waves.
