The air in Aunt Carol’s house, usually thick with the scent of lemon polish and something vaguely floral, felt heavy, suffocating. It was the kind of quiet that screamed, a stark contrast to the boisterous, messy life Jake and I had carved out for ourselves in stolen moments. He was gone. The words still felt alien, a foreign language my heart refused to translate. Aunt Carol, bless her well-meaning heart, buzzed around me like a worried bee, offering tea I couldn’t taste, platitudes that bounced off the walls of my grief.

“Are you sure you should be doing this, Lyla?” she’d asked, her brow furrowed with concern, as I pored over Jake’s old notebooks, their pages filled with a familiar, scrawling script.

“I have to, Aunt Carol,” I’d replied, my voice a thin thread. “He wouldn’t want me to just… stop.”
