The quiet of Aunt Carol’s house was a heavy blanket, suffocating and unfamiliar. Each tick of the grandfather clock in the hall felt like a hammer blow against my already fractured heart. Aunt Carol, bless her, was trying. She’d made me tea, her hands shaky as she poured, and offered gentle platitudes that felt hollow against the roar of my grief. But beneath the surface of her concern, I sensed a brittle tension, a carefulness that felt more like holding her breath than offering comfort.
“Lyla, honey,” she’d said yesterday, her voice soft, “you need to eat something.”
I’d just shaken my head, staring out the window at the perfectly manicured lawn, a stark contrast to the chaos inside me. Jake.
