The world had tilted, and I was still trying to find my footing on the splintered remnants of what I thought was solid ground. Aunt Carol. The woman who’d offered me a home, a haven, a chance to finally put down roots in soil that didn’t feel like it was constantly shifting beneath my feet. She was the one. The architect of Jake’s demise. The thought was a jagged shard of glass lodged in my throat, making it impossible to breathe, impossible to speak.
I stared at her, my eyes wide, searching for any flicker of recognition, any hint that what I’d just seen – what I’d just *understood* – wasn’t real. But her face, usually so carefully composed, was a mask of something I’d never seen before: raw, unadulterated panic. It was a fleeting moment, though, before it was smoothed over, replaced by that practiced concern that had been my comfort for the past few weeks.
"Lyla, darling, are you alright? You look pale," she cooed, her voice a silken thread, now frayed and thin to my ears. She reached out, her hand hovering near my arm, but I flinched away as if she’d brandished a hot poker.
