The air in Aunt Carol’s living room, usually thick with the scent of lavender and the quiet hum of the refrigerator, now felt heavy, suffocating. It was the kind of silence that screamed, the kind that pressed in on your eardrums until you felt like you might burst. I sat on the edge of the floral sofa, my hands clasped so tightly my knuckles were white, and stared at the woman who was supposed to be my family. My aunt. The one who had so readily opened her doors, her home, her life to me when I thought I had nothing left.
Her eyes, usually so warm and crinkled at the corners when she smiled, were now wide and unnervingly still. The gentle curve of her lips had tightened into a thin, hard line. She hadn’t moved from her armchair since I’d confronted her, not really. Just shifted, a subtle adjustment of her weight, a nervous flutter of her fingers on the armrest. It was like watching a bird trapped in a cage, its frantic energy suddenly frozen by the realization of its confinement.
"Lyla," she began, her voice a low, strained whisper that barely disturbed the oppressive quiet. "You don't understand."
