The air in Aunt Carol’s living room had always felt thick, a familiar weight that I’d attributed to the scent of old potpourri and the hushed ticking of the grandfather clock. Now, it felt suffocating, pressing in on me as Aunt Carol’s words hung in the silence, heavy and unreal. My gaze was fixed on the ornate, hand-painted teacup cradled in her trembling hands, the delicate floral pattern blurring as my own vision swam. It couldn’t be. It simply *couldn’t* be.
“Lyla, darling, you must understand,” Aunt Carol’s voice, usually so soothing, was now a strained whisper, laced with a fear I hadn’t detected before. “It was… necessary.”
Necessary? The word echoed in the cavernous space of my mind, a cruel mockery of the life I’d lost. Jake. My Jake. Dead. And the person who had offered me refuge, the one person who had, in a twisted way, become my family, was telling me *she* was the one who had made him disappear.
