The air in Aunt Carol’s living room had grown thick and heavy, each breath a struggle against an unseen force. It had started with a whisper, a hesitant confession from Aunt Carol, her voice barely a tremor in the quiet space. But as she spoke, the whispers grew, weaving a tangled narrative that coiled around me, tightening with every word. I sat on the edge of the floral armchair, the worn fabric doing little to soothe the growing unease in my stomach. Aunt Carol sat opposite me, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white, her gaze fixed on some point beyond my shoulder.
“He… he wouldn’t stop, Lyla,” she began, her voice cracking. “He was going to ruin everything.”
Ruin everything? I blinked, trying to process the words. Jake? Ruin everything? Jake was the sunshine breaking through my perpetual cloud, the one constant in a life that had been nothing but a series of goodbyes. He was the furthest thing from someone who would deliberately cause harm.
