It was the kind of smell that usually made me feel safe, a stark contrast to the sterile scent of disinfectant that had permeated my life for so long. But tonight, that familiar comfort was twisted, coated in a layer of ice that crept up my spine. Aunt Carol sat across from me, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her usually placid face etched with a strain I hadn’t seen before. The crumpled photograph of Jake, the one I’d clutched like a lifeline, lay on the coffee table between us, a silent accusation.

“Lyla,” she began, her voice a little shaky, “there’s something I need to tell you. Something I should have told you a long time ago.”
