Aunt Carol sat beside me, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her face a mask of practiced concern. But I could feel the subtle tremor in her fingers, a tiny betrayal of the calm she projected. I watched her, my own gaze unwavering, searching for something, anything, to confirm the gnawing suspicion that had taken root in my gut.
Across the table sat Mr. Henderson, his face etched with a weariness that went beyond mere sleepless nights. He was the detective assigned to Jake’s case, the one who’d patiently listened to my tearful ramblings, who’d gently steered my grief into a focused inquiry. But even his calm demeanor couldn't entirely erase the tension radiating from him. He’d agreed to this meeting, a private audience, after Aunt Carol had insisted, framing it as a way to “bring closure” and “clear the air.” Now, the air crackled, not with closure, but with an electric, terrifying anticipation.
"Mr. Henderson," Aunt Carol began, her voice a steady, melodic hum that always managed to soothe, to disarm. "We've been going over everything, Lyla and I. And there's just… there's something that doesn't sit right. About Jake's… accident."
