Chapter 5
A Taste of Friendship
Drake and Lilly find each other again, humbled. They admit their mistake and realize their friendship is more valuable than being right. They understand they need to combine their strengths and ideas to escape.
The world spun around Drake, a dizzying kaleidoscope of rainbow sherbet and lollipop trees. He’d landed with a soft thud on a marshmallow patch, the sweet, airy scent filling his nostrils. He sat up, his head still fuzzy from the separation. The last thing he remembered was Lilly’s indignant huff, her eyes as stormy as a blueberry slushie, and his own stubborn retort. He’d been so sure his way was the only way out, a direct dash through the licorice forest. Lilly, with her sensible head, had insisted on following the caramel river upstream. And then, a sudden gust of fizzy soda pop had swept them apart.
He’d been lost ever since, navigating a landscape that was as beautiful as it was bewildering. He’d dodged a torrent of melted chocolate from a geyser that erupted without warning and had to outwit a swarm of buzzing candy bees who guarded a hive made of honeycomb. Each challenge, though exciting in its own way, had left him feeling a hollow ache. It wasn’t the thrill of adventure that was missing, but the shared laughter, the quick glances of understanding, the comforting presence of his best friend. He missed Lilly. He missed her caution, her clever ideas, even her occasional nagging. He missed *her*.
He pushed himself to his feet, the marshmallow giving way with a squish. He needed to find her. Not to prove he was right, but just to see her face, to say he was sorry. As he trudged through the sugary terrain, a familiar sound reached his ears – a faint, melodic humming. It was Lilly’s tune, the one she hummed when she was concentrating, or when she was a little bit worried. His heart leaped. He followed the sound, his pace quickening, his eyes scanning the sugary horizon.
