Chapter 4
Sticky Situations
Drake and Lilly face individual candy-themed trials. Drake navigates a treacherous gummy bear maze, while Lilly crosses a wobbly gingerbread bridge. Both realize their chosen paths are harder without the other's help.
Drake found himself in a tangled forest of towering gummy bears. They were all different colors – ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue – and their chewy bodies formed a bewildering maze. Each gummy bear was as tall as a house, their sugary scent thick in the air. Drake, ever the adventurer, felt a thrill course through him. "This is it!" he declared to no one in particular, his voice echoing slightly. "The fastest way out! I bet if I can find the biggest, shiniest gummy bear, it’ll be the exit!" He bounded forward, his sneakers crunching on a carpet of what looked suspiciously like crushed rock candy.
He chose a path that seemed to lead toward a particularly large, cherry-red gummy bear glistening in the distance. But the maze was tricky. Paths twisted and turned unexpectedly, leading him in circles. He’d think he was making progress, only to find himself back at the start, staring at the same row of identical gummy bears. Frustration began to bubble beneath his excitement. He tried climbing a few of the gummy bears, hoping to get a better view, but their sticky surfaces offered little grip, and he slid down with a comical *thump*. "This isn't as easy as I thought," he grumbled, wiping a smear of red goo from his cheek. He missed Lilly's steady presence, her voice always reminding him to look before he leaped. He’d never admit it, but the sheer, overwhelming sameness of the gummy bears was starting to make him feel a little lost, a little small. He kicked at a stray candy pebble. "Lilly would’ve figured this out by now," he muttered, a pang of loneliness hitting him harder than any sugary wall.
Meanwhile, Lilly found herself teetering on the edge of a vast chasm. Spanning the gap was a bridge made entirely of gingerbread, its spicy aroma wafting up to meet her. It looked sturdy enough, dotted with gumdrop railings and iced with intricate royal icing patterns. "Okay," she whispered to herself, her heart thumping like a hummingbird's wings. "Drake’s way is too risky. This bridge is clearly the logical escape route. It's built, it's solid… mostly." She took a tentative step onto the gingerbread. It creaked ominously beneath her weight. The bridge swayed gently, like a boat on a calm sea.
