Detective Eva Rostova stared at the blurry security footage, the graininess of the late-night recording doing little to obscure the impossibly swift movement. It was a blink-and-you-miss-it anomaly, a flicker of impossible speed that had allowed a purse-snatcher to vanish into the pre-dawn gloom of Elm Street. Normally, such a petty crime would be a footnote in the precinct's daily log, but this was the third such incident in as many weeks. Three times, a perpetrator had performed a feat of agility that defied physics, leaving a bewildered victim and a trail of unanswered questions.
"Anything, Detective?" Officer Miller, a fresh-faced recruit still adjusting to the city's peculiar brand of chaos, loomed in the doorway of her cramped office.
Eva sighed, running a hand through her already disheveled dark hair. "Just the same phantom. Fast. Too fast. And whatever it was, it didn't leave a fingerprint." She tapped the screen. "This is the clearest we've got. The witness, Mrs. Gable, she’s shaken but insistent. Said it was like a… like a gust of wind, but with a person inside."
