The aroma of brewing coffee, a scent so familiar and comforting it felt like a balm to his recently unsettled soul, filled Sarah’s small apartment. Sunlight, buttery and warm, streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air like tiny, terrestrial constellations. Jack Black, perched on a stool at her worn butcher block island, felt a profound sense of ease settle over him. It was a fleeting sensation, he knew, as fragile as a soap bubble, but he clung to it with all his might.

Sarah, her brow furrowed in concentration as she expertly whisked batter in a ceramic bowl, hummed a tuneless melody. Her movements were fluid, practiced, the kind of grace that came from years of comfortable familiarity with her own kitchen, with her own life. There was no hint of the cosmic chaos that had irrevocably altered Jack’s existence. No tremor of fear, no flicker of awareness that the man sitting across from her possessed abilities that defied the very laws of nature.

“Almost ready for the blueberry explosion,” she announced, her voice bright and clear. She glanced at him, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “You’re unusually quiet this morning, Jack. Everything okay?”
