The city breathed a restless sigh, a symphony of distant sirens and the low thrum of unseen machinery. Detective Eva Rostova, however, heard more than just the usual urban cacophony. Her ears, honed by years of sifting through lies and deciphering the whispers of crime scenes, were picking up a new, unsettling frequency. It began subtly, like a faint static on a clear channel. A series of seemingly unrelated incidents, each bizarre in its own right, started to coalesce in her mind, forming a pattern that defied logical explanation.

It started with the bank robbery on Elm Street. Not the robbery itself, that was standard fare for a Tuesday morning. It was the aftermath. The vault, an impenetrable fortress of steel and concrete, had been found… melted. Not blasted open, not pried apart, but as if a colossal blowtorch had been applied with surgical precision, leaving the money untouched, the alarms undisturbed. Then came the incident at the construction site downtown. A crane, laden with a multi-ton steel beam, had inexplicably lost its grip mid-air. A disaster waiting to happen, a cascade of destruction that would have leveled half a city block. But the beam, instead of plummeting, had simply… floated. It had gently lowered itself to the ground, a silent testament to an impossible physics. The foreman, a burly man whose face was usually etched with the stoicism of hard labor, had stammered about a sudden gust of wind, a freak atmospheric anomaly. Eva had seen gusts of wind. This wasn’t wind.
