The rain had stopped, leaving the city slick and gleaming under the bruised twilight sky. Jack Black stood on the rooftop, the wind whipping his hair around his face, a familiar ache settling in his chest. It wasn’t the phantom sting of a near-miss or the buzz of latent energy; it was the dull, heavy throb of a decision made.
He’d spent the last few days in a haze of frantic activity, a whirlwind of rationalizations and justifications that had, in the end, amounted to nothing. The adrenaline had faded, leaving behind the stark, undeniable reality of what he was capable of, and what he had chosen. He’d seen the fear in the eyes of the thugs he’d subdued, the grudging respect in the bewildered stares of the bystanders. And he’d felt it too – a flicker of something unfamiliar, something that felt suspiciously like… purpose.
His fingers, usually restless, were still. He flexed them, the subtle hum of power a constant, almost comforting presence beneath his skin. He could feel the city breathing around him, a symphony of distant sirens, hurried footsteps, and the low rumble of traffic. It was a vast, complex organism, and for the first time, he felt like he was a part of it, not just a passive observer.
