Chapter 12
The Crossroads
Faced with a genuine crisis, Jack confronts the moral implications of his powers. Self-interest wars with a nascent sense of responsibility. What path will he choose?
The siren’s wail, a mournful banshee, tore through the night, a stark counterpoint to the usual urban hum. Jack Black’s apartment, usually a sanctuary of quiet contemplation and the faint aroma of stale pizza, felt suddenly claustrophobic. He stared out the window, the distant flashing red and blue lights painting streaks across the rain-slicked glass. This wasn't a fender-bender or a petty theft. This felt bigger. The news reports, fragmented and panicked, spoke of structural collapses, of a localized seismic event that had no business happening in their geologically stable city. They spoke of a gaping chasm that had opened up near the old industrial district, swallowing vehicles and spewing a noxious, luminescent gas.
A knot tightened in Jack’s stomach, a cold, unfamiliar sensation that had nothing to do with hunger or lack of sleep. It was the feeling of being implicated, of being the unseen puppeteer of chaos, even if he hadn’t directly pulled the strings this time. His powers, those capricious gifts from the heavens, had been dormant for days, a silent pact he’d made with himself to keep a low profile. Yet, the unease persisted, a phantom limb twitching with the memory of cosmic energy.
He’d rationalized his earlier uses of his abilities, hadn’t he? The perfectly timed parking spot, the effortless ascent up the stairs when his knees ached, the subtle nudge of luck that always seemed to land him the best deals. They were small things, insignificant ripples in the vast ocean of human existence. He’d told himself they were harmless, a personal compensation for a life that had felt perpetually mundane, perpetually overlooked. But this… this was different. This was a gaping maw of destruction, and the thought that his powers, however indirectly, might have played a part, gnawed at him.
