The hum of the city was a familiar lullaby to Jack Black, a constant thrum beneath the surface of his otherwise unremarkable existence. Or, it had been, until the sky had bled purple and gold, and a silent symphony of impossible energy had washed over him. Now, the hum felt different, laced with a subtle vibration that only he seemed to perceive, a whisper of the power that coiled within him. He’d been using it, of course. Small things, mostly. Never being late for work, always finding the perfect parking spot, convincing his landlord that a ‘minor’ plumbing issue was actually a ‘structural integrity concern’ that required immediate attention and a rent freeze. Sarah, bless her heart, had noticed the sudden ease in his life, attributing it to a good streak, a sudden burst of efficient planning. He’d just smiled, the secret a warm ember in his chest.

But Chapter 10 had ended with Sarah’s quiet unease, a shadow of concern clouding her usually bright eyes. She’d asked him, gently, if everything was alright, if he was sure he wasn’t pushing himself too hard, if this sudden… competence… was truly him. He’d brushed her off, a pang of guilt pricking at him, but the allure of effortless living was a potent drug. He was still Jack, after all. Just a Jack who didn’t have to sweat the small stuff anymore.

The day began like any other, the sun a cheerful, oblivious orb in the sky. Jack was enjoying a leisurely breakfast, contemplating whether to use his newfound… persuasion… to get the last blueberry muffin at the corner bakery, when the ground beneath him gave a violent shudder. Not a tremor, not an earthquake. This was a sickening lurch, as if the city itself had stumbled. Then came the sound, a guttural roar that ripped through the normally placid morning air, followed by a cacophony of alarms.
