Chapter 8
Trapped by the Past
The main doors are now sealed shut, an unseen force barring their escape. The temperature plummets, and chilling whispers fill the air, making it clear they are not merely visitors, but prisoners.
The heavy oak doors, which had groaned open with such reluctant invitation, now slammed shut with a finality that vibrated through the very marrow of their bones. Thomas, ever the first to react, spun around, his hand reaching for the ornate brass handle. It wouldn't budge. He shoved, then kicked, his boot meeting solid resistance that felt unnaturally unyielding. Joe, his usual sarcasm momentarily forgotten, joined the effort, his analytical mind already cataloging the impossible. "It's… it's locked," he stated, the obviousness of it hanging heavy in the dust-laden air. "From the outside."
Al, who had been clinging to Eric’s arm like a terrified limpet, let out a strangled whimper. "We're trapped," he breathed, his eyes wide and darting, already imagining the unseen hands that might have sealed their doom. Gabe, surprisingly, was less panicked and more intensely curious, his gaze sweeping across the grand foyer, a flicker of awe mixing with apprehension. "This is it," he murmured, his voice barely a whisper. "They don't want us to leave."
A profound chill, far beyond the autumn evening outside, seeped into the foyer. It wasn't just a drop in temperature; it was a palpable, icy embrace that snaked around their limbs, stealing the warmth from their breath. Their exhales plumed in the air like ghostly specters, a stark visual testament to the sudden, unnatural cold. The silence that had fallen after the slamming doors was now broken by a cacophony of whispers, faint at first, like the rustling of dry leaves, then growing in intensity, swirling around them, unintelligible yet undeniably menacing. They seemed to emanate from the very walls, from the shadows that clung to the corners of the vast room, from the portraits of stern-faced ancestors whose painted eyes seemed to follow their every move.
