Chapter 7
The Phantom's Grasp
A spectral figure briefly materializes in the hallway, its mournful eyes fixed on them. Panic surges through Al, while Joe's rationalizations falter. The haunting is no longer just unsettling; it's actively hostile.
The air in the grand hallway hung thick and still, a palpable silence that pressed in on their eardrums. Cobwebs, like tattered lace, draped from the ornate chandelier, catching the weak beams of their flashlights and casting dancing shadows that seemed to writhe with a life of their own. Thomas, ever the instigator, took a breath, the sound unnaturally loud in the oppressive quiet. "See? Told you it was something." His voice, usually brimming with bravado, held a slight tremor.

He adjusted his glasses, a nervous tic he’d developed since entering the house. "But ‘something’ doesn't necessarily mean ‘supernatural.’ Old houses settle. Drafts play tricks."
Al, however, was beyond rationalization. His eyes, wide as saucers, darted from one darkened corner to another. He clutched Eric’s arm like a drowning man clinging to driftwood. “Did you hear that?” he whispered, his voice a reedy squeak. “It sounded like… like someone crying.”
