The air inside the Blackwood Manor was thick and cloying, a palpable weight that pressed in on them, stealing their breath and amplifying the frantic thump of their own hearts. Dust motes danced like spectral ballerinas in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating the decay that had settled over the once-grand estate. Thomas, despite the prickle of unease crawling up his spine, managed a grin that felt a little too wide, a little too forced. “See? Told you it was something else!” he whispered, his voice barely disturbing the oppressive silence.

Joe, ever the pragmatist, snorted softly, his flashlight beam sweeping across the peeling wallpaper. “Something else that smells like a century of neglect and dead mice, Thomas. Thrilling.” His sarcasm was a thin shield against the palpable atmosphere of dread that clung to them.

Al, predictably, was a bundle of frayed nerves. He clutched Eric’s arm, his knuckles white. “I don’t like this. Not one bit. Can’t we just… go back? Pretend we didn’t see anything?” His voice trembled, a pathetic little squeak in the cavernous hall.
