Chapter 18
A Plea for Peace
Instead of fighting, Elara's spirit appears, guided by Al's empathy. She pleads with the tormented entity, revealing its pain and offering solace, weakening its hold on the house.
The air in the grand hall of Blackwood Manor hung thick and heavy, a tangible presence that pressed in on them, stealing their breath. The oppressive silence was a stark contrast to the cacophony of spectral screams and guttural growls that had filled the space moments before. Thomas, his initial bravado replaced by a grim determination, gripped the cold, splintered banister, his knuckles white. Joe stood beside him, his analytical mind struggling to reconcile the raw terror with the chilling stillness. Al, eyes wide and darting, was practically clinging to Eric’s arm, his breath coming in shallow gasps. Gabe, usually brimming with excited chatter, was eerily quiet, his gaze fixed on some unseen point in the darkness.
Suddenly, a soft, ethereal glow began to emanate from the center of the hall, coalescing into a shimmering form. It was a woman, her translucent gown rippling as if caught in a gentle breeze. Her face, though sorrowful, held a profound peace that seemed to push back against the suffocating dread. Thomas recognized her instantly from the faded portrait in the library – Elara.
Al, despite his trembling, took a small, hesitant step forward. His usual panic seemed to recede, replaced by an unexpected wave of empathy. He saw not a vengeful spirit, but a soul adrift, burdened by an immeasurable pain. “She’s… she’s not angry,” he whispered, his voice barely audible. “She’s just… sad.”
