Chapter 13
Al's Nightmare
Al's recurring nightmare takes shape before him. He sees Elara's final moments, her fear mirroring his own. This intense connection allows him to perceive a hidden passage, a potential escape route.
The air in the grand hall of Blackwood Manor hung thick and heavy, a tangible shroud that clung to Al like a damp, icy cloak. Each breath he took felt shallow, insufficient, as if the very atmosphere was leached of life. Thomas, ever the instigator, was a few paces ahead, his flashlight beam dancing across the peeling wallpaper, a grotesque kaleidoscope of faded roses and forgotten lives. Joe, his brow furrowed in a perpetual state of skepticism, fiddled with a small, humming device, his lips pressed into a thin line. Eric, solid and unreadable, moved with a quiet efficiency, his eyes scanning their surroundings with a practiced vigilance. And Gabe, his face alight with a feverish excitement, was already pointing his phone camera at every shadow, every cobweb, his whispered commentary a running soundtrack to their descent into the macabre.
But Al… Al was drowning. The opulent decay of the manor wasn't just an aesthetic; it was a visceral, sickening echo of something he knew too well. The ornate chandelier, its crystals dulled and coated in grime, swayed with a phantom breeze, each creak and groan a familiar dissonance in the symphony of his dread. He squeezed his eyes shut, a futile attempt to block out the encroaching reality, but the images were already there, burned into the backs of his eyelids.
*Darkness. Cold. The suffocating weight of despair.*
