The air in the grand foyer grew heavy, thick with an oppressive chill that had nothing to do with the peeling wallpaper or the cobwebs that draped like macabre lace from the chandelier. Thomas, who had been about to crack a nervous joke, found the words catching in his throat. Joe, ever the pragmatist, adjusted his glasses, his skepticism wavering like a candle flame in a draft. Al whimpered, his eyes wide and darting, while Eric stood sentinel, his jaw set, and Gabe, his camera already whirring, leaned forward, an almost manic gleam in his eyes.
The silence that had descended after Elara’s spectral plea was not an absence of sound, but rather a suffocating presence, a prelude to something terrible. It was in that pregnant hush that the house truly began to awaken. The floorboards beneath them groaned, not with the settling of an old structure, but with a deep, resonant ache that seemed to emanate from the very foundations. A gust of wind, sharp and icy, swept through the foyer, though every window and door remained resolutely shut. It carried with it a scent that was both ancient and foul, like damp earth and something long dead.
"Okay," Joe whispered, his voice strained, "that was… not normal."
