Chapter 5: The Cracks Begin to Show
Kaito tries to avoid Ren's scrutiny by volunteering for a night watch shift alone, but a demon scout attack forces him to use his powers openly to save the camp. Ren witnesses the aftermath and confronts Kaito directly, forcing a fragile truce where Ren agrees to keep Kaito's secret in exchange for answers. The chapter ends with Kaito realizing he can no longer hide, just as a larger demon force is spotted approaching.
The evening air had turned cold, carrying the scent of woodsmoke and damp earth. Kaito sat alone near the edge of the camp, watching the stars struggle through thin clouds. The conversation with Ren replayed in his mind like a broken record.

He should have been more careful. He knew Ren was observant—the guy had a talent for noticing things that didn't fit. And Kaito's entire existence was now a thing that didn't fit.
