The air in the Thorne family dining room was thick, not with the scent of roast lamb or the cloying perfume of Mrs. Thorne’s potpourri, but with a suffocating silence that clung to the crystal and polished silver like a shroud. Nala felt it pressing in, a tangible weight that made her breath catch in her throat. Across the expanse of gleaming mahogany, Aris’s parents sat like austere judges, their gazes, sharp and assessing, flitting between their son and the woman he’d inexplicably brought into their hallowed halls. Mrs. Thorne, a vision in emerald silk, had dissected Nala’s family background with the precision of a surgeon, her questions laced with an undercurrent of polite curiosity that felt more like a subtle dissection. Nala had parried each thrust with practiced grace, her witty retorts and anecdotes carefully chosen to paint a picture of a woman who was not only suitable but, dare she think it, desirable.
