The polished veneer of their arrangement, a fragile construct built on mutual necessity and a shared disdain for complication, began to show hairline fractures. Nala found herself watching Aris, not with the usual simmering resentment, but with a curious, almost anthropological fascination. He was a creature of habit, his mornings a symphony of precisely brewed coffee and meticulously ironed shirts. Yet, beneath the stoic façade, there were moments, fleeting and unexpected, that tugged at something within her.

It happened during one of their mandated "couple" outings, a dreadful gallery opening meant to cement their fabricated bond in the eyes of a few carefully selected acquaintances. Nala, feeling the familiar prickle of anxiety, had retreated to a quiet corner, nursing a glass of champagne and the overwhelming urge to flee. Aris, who had been diligently working the room, a practiced smile plastered on his face, found her there. Instead of the expected reprimand for abandoning her post, he simply stood beside her, his gaze sweeping over the throng of art patrons.

"Drowning your sorrows in overpriced bubbly?" he asked, his voice a low rumble that cut through the polite chatter.
