Red Flag
The air in the pit lane was thick with the scent of burning rubber and anticipation. Lara Vance, her helmet already secured, felt the familiar thrum of adrenaline coursing through her veins. This was it – the final race of the season, the championship decider. The roar of the crowd was a distant wave, a sound she’d learned to channel into focus, not distraction. Beside her, Coach Thorne gave her a nod, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He knew how much this meant. He also knew what was at stake, the invisible weight of her secret pressing down even harder than the G-forces she’d soon be enduring.
“Remember what we practiced, Lara,” Thorne’s voice was a low rumble in her earpiece, steady and reassuring. “Control the line. Trust your instincts. And if anything feels…off, you know what to do.”
Lara’s gloved hand tightened on the steering wheel. “I know, Coach.” She didn’t need to elaborate. The ‘what to do’ was their contingency, a coded signal they’d devised for moments of genuine danger, moments when the shadowy tendrils of Silas Vane’s organization might reach out to pluck her from the track. She’d seen their handiwork before – a mysteriously loose bolt, a sudden computer glitch, a rival’s unexplained maneuver. Each time, she’d narrowly avoided disaster, her past knowledge, the very thing Vane wanted to suppress, kicking in to save her.
