The air in the pit lane crackled, not just with the usual hum of engines and the scent of burning rubber, but with a palpable tension that seemed to slither through the crowded space. Lara Vance, her gloved hands resting lightly on her helmet, felt it prickling at the back of her neck. The Grand Prix of Veridia, the penultimate race before the championship finale, was just hours away, and the whispers had become a low, persistent hiss.

“They’re saying… they’re saying your engine was tampered with before the qualifying lap,” Anya Petrova, her rival and nemesis, said, her voice laced with a feigned concern that didn’t quite reach her eyes. Anya, sleek and predatory in her team’s colors, leaned against a nearby barrier, her gaze unwavering.

Lara’s jaw tightened. She’d felt something, a subtle tremor, a fractional loss of power that had cost her a crucial tenth of a second. She’d dismissed it as nerves, the pressure of the track, but Anya’s words, however unwelcome, confirmed her deepest fears. “Who is ‘they,’ Anya?” Lara asked, her voice dangerously calm.
