The late afternoon sun, usually a harbinger of warmth and golden hues, felt muted today, casting long, weary shadows across Sarah’s small apartment. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light, tiny, unconcerned witnesses to the quiet ache that had settled in her chest like a persistent chill.
