Chapter 16
Eleanor's Breaking Point
Eleanor's yandere obsession reaches a dangerous climax, threatening to harm Mark or someone close to him, forcing Jake's hand.
Eleanor’s world had narrowed, shrinking to a single, burning point: Mark. The soft murmur of the city outside had faded, the once-comforting hum of existence now an irritating distraction. All that mattered was the quiet rhythm of his breathing, the way his hair fell across his forehead when he slept, the very air he exhaled. This was love, wasn't it? A fierce, all-consuming devotion that demanded every ounce of his attention, every beat of his heart.
She’d started small, a gentle nudge here, a whispered concern there. *“Are you sure you should be going out tonight, darling? You look so tired.”* Or, *“That girl, Sarah… she doesn’t seem like she truly appreciates you.”* These were the anxieties of a loving mother, surely. But Jake, with his careful words and insidious suggestions, had fanned the embers of her maternal protectiveness until they were a roaring inferno. He’d spoken of Mark’s future, of the dangers lurking in the world, of the need for a mother’s unwavering vigilance. He’d painted a picture of a son too precious, too pure, to be sullied by the outside world, a son who needed his mother’s complete and utter dedication.
Now, the whispers had become commands, the concerns had morphed into possessive pronouncements. Mark, bless his oblivious heart, had tried to push back, a flicker of annoyance in his eyes. *“Mom, I’m twenty-two, not twelve. I can handle myself.”* But Eleanor, buoyed by Jake’s constant, subtle reinforcement of her right to control, saw his independence not as a sign of maturity, but as a terrifying betrayal. He was trying to pull away, to escape her love, and that simply could not be allowed.
