Arthur paced the polished oak floor of his study, the late afternoon sun casting long, accusing shadows across the room. Each tick of the grandfather clock in the hall felt like a hammer blow against his fraying nerves. The latest report from his CFO lay open on his desk, a grim testament to the steady, inexplicable drain on the company’s resources. Small clients, the bedrock of Arthur’s business, the ones who’d been with him through thick and thin, were peeling away like autumn leaves. Not in droves, not with grand pronouncements, but one by one, their contracts quietly expiring, their loyalty mysteriously eroded.

He ran a hand through his thinning hair, the familiar comfort of his leather-bound books offering no solace. It was a subtle rot, insidious and deeply unsettling. He’d always prided himself on building relationships, on fostering trust. Now, that trust seemed to be a currency he no longer possessed. He’d tried reasoning with them, offering better terms, bespoke solutions, but they were polite, distant, their reasons vague and unconvincing. It felt like a betrayal, a deep, personal insult from people he’d considered allies.

The phone on his desk rang, jolting him. He snatched it up, his voice tight with impatience. “Arthur Sterling.”
