Mark's Growing Apprehension

Mark starts to be genuinely scared of his mother's behavior. He confides in Jake, who feigns concern while secretly enjoying the escalating chaos.

The polished glass of the cafe window offered a distorted reflection of Mark, his brow furrowed, his usual easy smile absent. He clutched his coffee cup, the warmth doing little to soothe the chill that had settled deep within him. Across the small table, Jake offered a sympathetic nod, his own expression a carefully curated mask of concern.

"She's… she's not herself, Jake," Mark confessed, his voice barely above a whisper, as if the very walls had ears. "It’s like she’s a completely different person. She calls me twenty times a day, wanting to know where I am, who I’m with. If I don't answer immediately, she panics. She… she started crying the other day because I was late for dinner. Not just a few tears, Jake, she was inconsolable."

Jake’s gaze met Mark’s, his eyes wide with feigned surprise, a subtle tilt of his head conveying empathy. He reached out, his hand resting lightly on Mark's arm, a gesture of solidarity. "That sounds incredibly stressful, man. I can’t imagine what you’re going through." Inside, however, a quiet satisfaction bloomed, a dark flower unfolding its petals in the shadowed corners of his mind. Eleanor’s descent was progressing precisely as he’d orchestrated. Each of her increasingly erratic actions was a testament to his careful whispers, his insidious suggestions.
