The scent of stale coffee and old paper clung to Evelyn as she pushed open the door of The Gilded Quill. It was a bookstore, but more than that, it was a sanctuary, a labyrinth of towering shelves where whispers of forgotten stories still lingered. Arthur’s notebook had mentioned it, a fleeting reference to a poetry reading, a crumpled flyer she’d found pressed between his chaotic scrawls. “The Quill,” he’d written, “where words find wings.”

She scanned the room, a nervous flutter in her chest. Had he been here? Was he here now? The air was thick with the quiet rustle of turning pages and the soft murmur of hushed conversations. Evelyn felt a familiar unease, the prickle of being an outsider in a world she longed to understand but found perpetually out of reach. She clutched Arthur's notebook to her chest, its worn cover a strange comfort. It felt… alive, pulsing with the vibrant, messy energy of its owner.

A woman with a silver braid and spectacles perched precariously on her nose looked up from behind the counter, her gaze sharp and inquisitive. “Can I help you, dear?”
