The train shuddered to a halt, the sudden jolt rattling Evelyn’s teeth. She blinked, the fluorescent lights of the carriage momentarily blurring. The rhythmic clack of the rails, a lullaby she hadn’t realized she’d been listening to, had ceased. A disembodied voice crackled over the intercom, a garbled apology about unexpected delays and unforeseen technical difficulties. Evelyn sighed, a small, almost imperceptible puff of air that barely disturbed the quiet chill of the carriage. This was precisely why she preferred to drive. Predictability, control. Two things the national rail service seemed to actively disdain.
