Chapter 3

Police cars converged, their flashing lights painting the night in streaks of red and blue. Cornered, the figure in black had nowhere left to run. Detective Rehan approached slowly, his voice calm yet commanding. "Take off the mask," he said. The figure hesitated for a moment, then, with a resigned sigh, slowly pulled away the disguise. Gasps rippled through the assembled officers. It was Roni, the household driver. Alva, her face a mask of disbelief, whispered, "Roni? It was you?" Roni stood with his head bowed, a picture of shame. Rehan, however, remained impassive. "You are not the real thief," he stated, his gaze sharp. "Tell me, Roni, who sent you there?" Trembling, Roni confessed that he had been paid twenty lakh rupees by someone to retrieve a box from beneath the rose bushes in the garden. When pressed for a name, he stammered, "Mr. Larz." Alva cried out in protest, "No! It can't be!" But Rehan held up a hand. "I need more than a confession," he said. The next morning, Rehan returned to the opulent house, his eyes scanning every detail. He walked into Larz's private office, his gaze lingering on the heavy, ornate pen on the desk. Unscrewing it, he found a small, folded piece of paper. "Tonight, one A.M. Old banyan tree. Bring the goods. Full payment," it read. A slow smile spread across Rehan's face. He knew he had his man. The rest of the day was spent in calculated inaction, letting Larz believe the investigation had stalled. But as midnight approached, the surrounding area was silently cordoned off by police. Larz emerged from the house, a black bag clutched in his hand, and hurried towards the ancient banyan tree. Just as he met a shadowy figure waiting in the darkness, the area erupted in light. "Police! Don't move!" Rehan stepped forward, blocking Larz's escape. "The game is over, Larz." The bag was opened, and there, nestled within, was the dazzling blue diamond. Alva sobbed, "Why, Larz? Why would you do this?" Larz, defeated, confessed his crippling business debts and his desperate plan to sell the diamond to an overseas buyer. Rehan, ever observant, pointed out Larz's fatal mistakes: the flicker of greed in his eyes when the diamond's value was mentioned, his attempts to thwart Rehan's access to the storeroom, Roni's failed attempt to remove evidence, and finally, the incriminating note. As the police led Larz away, Alva, clutching her father's recovered treasure, thanked Rehan. "You've not only returned my diamond," she said, tears streaming down her face, "but the truth as well." Rehan simply smiled. "Truth, no matter how deeply buried, always finds a way to surface." As the sun dipped below the horizon, Rehan drove away, another case closed, another victory added to his legendary record.
