The grand house, a monument to her father’s unyielding success, felt less like a home and more like a meticulously crafted prison. Mahnoor moved through its opulent halls, a phantom in silk and pearls, her every step echoing the hollowness within. The laughter of her husband, a man whose name was as foreign to her as the lands he traded in, felt like a persistent, irritating buzz against the silence that had settled deep in her soul. He spoke of business empires, of mergers and acquisitions, of a future paved with more gold than her eyes could bear to see, but his words were mere wind, rustling the leaves of a tree that had long since withered.

Her days were a monotonous cycle of societal obligations and forced smiles. Luncheons with the wives of equally influential men, their conversations a shallow stream of gossip and displays of wealth, left her feeling more drained than a desert traveller. Evenings were spent in the company of her husband, a polite stranger who occupied the same space but never touched the core of her being. He was kind, in his own detached way, providing every material comfort, but the warmth she craved, the understanding she desperately sought, remained an elusive mirage.

Her only refuge was the solitude of her chambers, a room filled with the scent of expensive perfumes and the weight of unspoken sorrows. Here, away from the prying eyes and polite inquiries, Mahnoor allowed herself to unravel. She would sit by the tall, arched windows, watching the city lights twinkle like distant, unattainable stars, and her mind would drift back, always back, to the faded elegance of a certain park, to the scent of damp earth after a summer shower, to the rough warmth of a hand that had once held hers with a tenderness that had defined her world.
