Chapter 8

A Detective's Obsession

8 min read

The city was a breathing, bleeding entity, its arteries clogged with the grime of desperation and the thick, metallic tang of fear. Each sunrise was a fragile truce, a temporary reprieve before the shadows reclaimed their dominion. Detective Isabella Rossi knew this rhythm intimately, had felt its pulse thrumming beneath her skin for years. But this case, this knot of bodies and broken lives, it was different. It gnawed at her, a persistent ache behind her eyes, a phantom limb of guilt she couldn't quite shake.

She’d had dreams of traveling, of escaping the suffocating confines of the city. She was, by all accounts, a good kid. And that’s what made it so damn infuriating. The monsters didn’t discriminate. They feasted on innocence as readily as they did on sin.
