Chapter 16
A Lover's Gambit
The city held its breath, a grimy lung filled with exhaust fumes and unspoken fears. The streetlights, those jaundiced eyes of the night, cast long, skeletal shadows that danced with every tremor of the wind. It was in this suffocating embrace that Jazzy made her choice, a decision as sharp and cold as the steel that had become so familiar to her hands. Her heart, a frantic bird trapped in a ribcage, beat a rhythm of desperation against the silence.
She stood at the edge of the alley, the familiar stench of stale urine and overflowing dumpsters a comfort and a curse. This was her world, the one Marcus had built, brick by bloody brick. And now, she had to decide if she would stand by and watch it crumble, or if she would be the one to bring it all down. She thought of Marcus, his eyes, sometimes so clear and sharp, other times clouded with a darkness she both feared and was drawn to. He saw his crew, his "family," as pawns in his grand, violent game. And she, Jazzy, the ambitious survivor, was one of his most prized pieces. But the game was changing, the stakes too high, the body count too damning. The weight of it all pressed down on her, a suffocating blanket woven from guilt and fear.
