The air in the cavern was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something metallic and sharp that clung to the back of my throat. Kaelen’s breath was a ragged sound beside me, his eyes, usually pools of obsidian, were wide with a fear that mirrored my own. The Sunstone pulsed in his hand, a captured ember against the encroaching darkness of the tunnels. It was supposed to be our escape, our bargaining chip, our hope. Now, it felt like a brand, a beacon drawing every hunter in this unforgiving land directly to us.
“They know,” he rasped, his voice tight. “The alarm. It must have been triggered when we… when we took it.”
I swallowed, the dryness in my mouth making it a difficult task. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. Every instinct screamed at me to run, to disappear, but where? The Solarian guards would be swarming the palace, their torches cutting through the night like avenging angels. And Luminis… Luminis would have its own hounds unleashed, their senses attuned to the slightest disturbance, their loyalty absolute to a cause I no longer understood.
