The air in the abandoned watchtower was thick with the scent of damp stone and the faint, metallic tang of old blood. It was a lonely place, perched precariously on the edge of the Whispering Peaks, a stark reminder of the forgotten skirmishes that had scarred this borderland. Outside, the wind howled, a mournful lament that seemed to echo the turmoil in my own heart. Kaelen sat by the crumbling hearth, his silhouette a sharp contrast against the flickering firelight, his gaze fixed on the flames as if seeking answers within their dance.
“Are you certain about this?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper, afraid to shatter the fragile quiet. We had spent the last few days moving through the treacherous terrain, a constant, gnawing fear our companion. Each rustle of leaves, each distant cry of a night bird, sent jolts of adrenaline through me. Solarian patrols, Luminis scouts – we were hunted by both.
Kaelen finally looked at me, his eyes, usually so sharp and assessing, held a flicker of something I couldn’t quite decipher. Weariness, perhaps. Or something deeper. “The symbols… they match the texts I studied in the archives. The ones that were deemed heretical.”
