The wind whipped my hair across my face, a wild, untamed thing, much like the landscape we were hurtling through. The Solarian palace, with its gilded cages and suffocating expectations, felt a lifetime away, though it had only been hours since I’d slipped through its shadowed corridors, a ghost in my own home. Now, the only home I knew was the stark, unforgiving expanse of the borderlands, a jagged scar between our two warring kingdoms.

My lungs burned with the effort of breathing the thin, crisp air. Beside me, Kaelen moved with a predator’s grace, his dark cloak a ripple against the muted greens and browns of the terrain. He hadn’t spoken much since we’d scrambled over the crumbling outer wall, his focus solely on putting distance between us and the alerted guards. But I felt his presence, a constant, humming tension that vibrated just beneath my skin. It was the awareness of him, the sheer, terrifying reality of his proximity, that made my heart hammer against my ribs with a rhythm that was no longer entirely fear.

"We need to find shelter," he finally said, his voice a low rumble that barely carried over the sigh of the wind. He pointed towards a cluster of jagged rocks that jutted from the hillside like broken teeth. "There might be a cave, or at least some cover from the elements."
